Harvard Pilgrim Health Care granted license to operate in Connecticut

CT Insurance Department Approves Expansion

Hartford, CT - April 3, 2014

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care announced today that it has been granted the necessary state approvals to begin offering health coverage to consumers in the state of Connecticut.

“This is a very exciting day for us,” said Harvard Pilgrim President and CEO Eric H. Schultz. “We look forward to bringing alternative choices and our outstanding clinical and customer service programs to the people of Connecticut. As a not-for-profit health plan, our offerings emphasize quality and value for members and employers.

“This day also has a special meaning for me. It’s like coming home,” said Schultz, who was raised and attended school in Connecticut.

The Connecticut Department of Insurance granted licensure to Harvard Pilgrim after a full review of its plans to begin doing business in the state. The health plan, which has been ranked #1 in the nation for member satisfaction and quality of care for ten consecutive years by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)*, plans to begin selling in the second quarter of 2014 for a July 1 effective coverage date. Last fall, the company opened an office in Hartford at 185 Asylum Street.

“Harvard Pilgrim presently operates in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. Connecticut represents a major contiguous expansion, making our organization one of the largest health insurers operating in these four states,” said Schultz. “This is an important step in our vision to be New England’s top regional health services organization working closely with employers, individuals, brokers and providers. Connecticut is America’s insurance capital, and we are proud to be participants.”
